Wyoming: ACLU Lawsuit Forces Prison to Install “No Pork” Microwaves for Muslim Inmates

Submitted by Rick Honcho on Wednesday, November 26 2008No Comment

Judge Brimmer was a busy man over the past week. His eminence approved an agreement last week that allows religious prisoners at the state penitentiary in Rawlins to keep their meals in their cells until the next meal is served. The decision will settle a lawsuit filed by the ACLU on behalf of two Muslim inmates who claim they did not have time to say their prayers and eat their meals. Under the old rule, the Wyoming Department of Corrections allowed inmates only 20 minutes to consume their food.

The decision also requires the prison to install a new microwave for inmates that won’t be used for pork, which is forbidden to Muslims and members of some other religions. The television story appeared on Local News 8.
