Shooting caught on video leads to arrests
Two Alton brothers have been charged with armed violence after police viewed a video recording of a fist fight between two men that ended in gunfire, wounding another man.
Police recovered the video while investigating the Sunday morning shooting of Ryan H. North, 19, of the 500 block of Porter Street in Alton.
North suffered a superficial back wound and was treated at Alton Memorial Hospital.
The video was obtained Monday from the home of North’s sister, L’Tanya M. Smith, 33, of the 1500 block of Mack Street.
The video depicts a fist fight between two men outside Smith’s home, with several on-lookers. It shows two men with weapons and ends with a shot being fired.
Alton Police Department chief of detectives Lt. David Hayes, said evidence from the video led to charges filed Tuesday against brothers Byron E. Blake, 21, and Bryon D. Blake, 17, both of the 1200 block of Surrey Court, in Godfrey.
Both men are accused of armed violence and aggravated battery with a fire arm. Armed violence carries a minimum penalty of 20 years in prison.
Byron Blake was in custody today and is being held without bond. Bryon Blake is still being sought by police.
Hayes said Byron Blake was one of the men involved in the fist fight. The two are accused with firing a MAC-10 semi-automatic pistol and wounding North.
Only the two Blake brothers had been charged as of this morning, and Hayes said that prosecutors would determine whether additional charges would be filed.
