I got this email today…thought I would share.

Why Affirmative Action is hurting us…

Ok, so the semester is coming to an end in less than a month, and I’ve been looking around my hometown for a summer job. I was unsuccessful in finding seasonal employment for the last two summers, but I have not been pessimistic this time around. The other day I applied to work at a marketplace in Mystic. I filled out my application there and turned it in. I got a call the next day saying that they were only interested at the time in hiring minority applicants…and told me to have a nice day. I had to control myself so hard not to trash them out.

If there are two Democratic concepts that I HATE, they are global warming and affirmative action. Affirmative action gives preferential and compensatory treatment to previously disadvantaged groups, which 95% of the time are minorities. It is most easy to describe this concept not in the hiring of workers, but in college admissions. Many colleges set aside quotas for a particular race, which means that a less qualified black student can be admitted over a more qualified white or Asian student. The admitting of less qualified students has resulted in a decline in test scores, total GPA’s, and even the prestige of some universities.

College admissions should be based on merit and involvement, not color. Proponents of affirmative action don’t realize that you can’t solve the problem of discrimination with more discrimination. Also, it must be noted that in addition to those who do not benefit from affirmative action seeing themselves as being treated unfairly, those who DO benefit from affirmative action see it in a negative light because it implies that they need special protection from the government to get anywhere in life.

There ya have…smart kid.
