Top 10 Poorest cities in USA
CINCINNATI (TDB) — The Census Bureau released reams of data about poverty in the United States, and Ohio was the only state that held two spots in the Top Ten ranking of America’s poorest large cities. Cincinnati was No. 3 on the list and Cleveland was No. 4. They were in a a statistical dead heat with 27.8% of all Cincinnati residents living in poverty, versus 27% in Cleveland. That is roughly 185,000 people between the two cities, which once were envied around the globe as economic gems where jobs were plentiful and neighborhoods thrived.
The ranking, including the percentage in poverty, is as follows:
1. Detroit, 32.5
2. Buffalo, 29.9
3. Cincinnati, 27.8
4. Cleveland, 27.0
5. Miami, 26.9
6. St. Louis, 26.8
7. El Paso, 26.4
8. Milwaukee, 26.2
9. Philadelphia, 25.1
10. Newark, 24.2
Five of the 10 are in the Midwest, a region that is losing ground to globalization as manufacturers move offshore to nations such as China. The data is really bad news for Cincinnati, which ascended from No. 8 last year. Cleveland fell out of first place. Each August, the government releases detailed estimates about poverty and the full-text of the report is available at this link. The report is called Income, Earnings and Poverty Data from the 2006 American Community Survey. The results often can trigger civic angst and debate over the accuracy of the numbers presented, along with disputes about a community’s position in the rankings. For example, Cleveland has been in first place twice in recent years, but there has been no significant changes in the city’s economy. Mostly, the Census data can serve as a snapshot to show how a large city is faring — and in this case the numbers appear grim for both Cleveland and Cincinnati.
In Cincinnati, where a City Council race is under way, the data is sure to become fodder for campaigning up through election day in November. Incumbents and former council members are generally favored to win the nine seats on the ballot. But voters might be disposed to ask Ronald Reagan’s famous question about the economy — are you better off now than four years ago. A story last year about poverty in Cincinnati is still on the Policy Matters Ohio Website. One of the authors was former Cincinnati Enquirer business reporter James McNair, who was fired 12 days ago because he wasn’t “fair and balanced,” according to the newspaper’s termination letter.
do the math folks….all these cities have the same thing in common. Think hard you’ll get it…

I’m in Buffalo, too. Wages have gone DOWN so much. I have an MBA, and I’m fighting for a job for $11 an hour - at Bank Of America headquarters! We are the Guatemala back office for many Fortune 500 companies now. Tried to leave last year, but crashed and burned last year in a tough NYC work environment. I’m going to try again to get out–soon, though I have a house to sell, etc.
I shudder to think of the low dollar amount that my Social Security check will be when I turn 62, based on a lifetime of Buffalo’s poverty wages. I’m 51 now. Not much time left.
I pulled my family out of Buffalo 10 years ago. One of the best things that I ever did. While my job was pretty secure, I knew my 3 kids could only look forward to flipping burgers for a living if they stayed there.
Thank the Unions, Inept Politicians, and the Blizzard of ‘77 for killing the Goose that lays the golden eggs (i.e., private business enterprises).
You knew your 3 kids could only look forward to flipping burgers for a living??? How about encouraging them to go to college and further their education? That is if you encourage them to graduate from high school. I am currently a college student in Buffalo, and I work and make 12.50 an hour with only a high school diploma. The only way you will flip burgers is if you are a moron. Jobs in Buffalo are bad, but you make it sound third-world.
I had lived in Philadelphia for many years.Philly is a poor city. Many Philadelphians don’t have cars.Philly has high teen pregnacy.Philly is very segregated, many blacks lived in neighborhoods that have few or none Puerto Ricans,Hispanics and whites. The majority of Philadelphians live in apartments.Blacks are the majority in Philly. Many of black schools have elementary, middle school, and high school students in the same building but different classes.
I’m proud to be from Buffalo. Yes I’ll admit its a cold, broke down, piece of shit city, all i own is a sofa and a bed but its a damn living so beat me ball u assholes. All u mother fuckers who are living in tose faggot ass suburbs Id just like to say FUCK YOU!!!!!!!!
i live in buffalo, i’m from somewhere else…i read that miami was the poorest and i thought to myself, “yea right, buffalo has to be the poorest,” and there you go it went up from #5 to #2. next year i bet it’s #1. WHITE TRASH CAPITAL OF THE U.S. the locals hate the University but it’s the ONLY thing holding this city together, with UB there would be no buffalo. GO BULLS.
first off shame to all who left buffalo..we have A GREAT waterfront city, 2 major sports franchises, close to the falls n canada…like the young man above me i make 12.50 an hour w only a high school diploma.. and im only 21 yrs old..keep in mind the cheap cost of living here-try to find a 1 bdrm apt in any major city on a slightly higher than minimum wage avrg..personally i love this town and will never leave. i will stay for the raising of the stanley cup banner (and the parade on seymore knox blvd..) and the hosting of the lombardi…and i will stay for wen our city rebounds and returns to its original glory..
i lived in buffalo and it may be the 2nd poorest city but they have many good people and i not sure if i would want to live their now because there no future their but i will never for get where i came from and buffalo made me the person i am to day sucessful and happy
I am from Buffalo and although I liked my life there, I always new I would leave and I am glad I did. It’s depressing and hopeless.
i was born n raised in buffalo for 22 years. I HATE this city with a passion. the streets r terrible, winter is so cold, murders are up, and crime is ridiculous. i moved to georgia in april 08 to try and get a better chance. and so far i like where i live.it aint no runned down buildings, drug addicts, terrible streets, people on the corner, and not alot of crime.buffalo should number one and i am surprised miami is on here.but buffalo IS NOT THE PLACE TO BE

It is very sad that Cleveland has made the list, it is a very cultural city filled with many things to do. There are just no jobs.
Left Cleveland in 2004 after my divorce and now live outside of Columbus Ohio. What a difference, Columbus has become a young vibrant city with tremendous upside while Cincinnati (my hometown) and Cleveland continue to spiral downward.
SAD TO SAY BUFFALO IS POOR I ATTEND SCHOOL OUT HERE AND NOT ONLY IS IT MISERABLE BUT DEPRESSIN AS WELL. THERE ARE NOT MANY JOB OPPORTUNITES AND THE RENT IS WAY BELOW PAY. SEE IM FROM NYC AND IF U COMPARE THERE IS A MAJOR DIFFERENCE IN THEIR ECONOMIC SYSTEM THAN OURS.
buffalo is a city of good people and yes buffalo has no job, but the
people of buffalo have something important education and at the end of the day that is what matters.
SO WAKE UP PEOPLE AND STOP JUDGING BUFFALO THE HOME OF THE BUFFALO SABERS AND THE BUFFALO BILL AND MAYBE THE FUTER PRESIDENT
If you don’t like Buffalo then leave. A problem with alot of these surveys are that they don’t include the suburbs. It’s not like you can’t live in Amherst NY and still enjoy Buffalo culture. Buffalo is a old but beautiful city. The city hall itself could rival NYC or Chicago. You get four seasons, a waterfront, two great lakes, the finger lakes, mountians on the east side of the state, hills in the south towns, Niagara Falls, Canada, two major sports teams, wine makers all around, and alot of good food. The ratio to income to cost of living really isn’t that bad either.

I miss Buffalo terribly, I go to Buffalo State College and am taking the semester off, I don’t think I’d make the move up there permanently, but I definitely wanna some more time there.

Danny & Observer, Thank you for confirming that politics has played a major role in Buffalo’s horrible economy. It is quite evident that Buffalo needs a Republican in office!
Mind you that this survey is just of the city itself, not any of the suburbs. Most suburban Buffalonians identify themselves with the city; however, the mean income in most suburbs (i.e. Amherst, Orchard Park, Clarence) is significantly higher than of the city.
Buffalo has a lot to offer with culture, sports, architecture, great colleges, history, and of course Niagra Falls. The city just needs to focus on capitalizing on these income sources.

I have just moved to Buffalo a few weeks ago, but grew up only about an hour and a half away. True, Buffalo is poor and doesn’t have a lot of jobs, but people have to stop making excuses that if you live here you will never amount to anything. Yes it is hard to find a job, but it doesn’t mean you won’t. You just have to be on top of things and looking in the right areas. It does have a bad crime rate but there are a lot of places in the area that offer a lot. I live by the Buffalo zoo area and there is a lot to offer. Also, the cost of living is significantly lower than most cities, which you have to take in account. I wish that people would stop complaining, if you don’t like it don’t live here! Also if you don’t live here then you really can not comment at all.
All these cities have been run by Democrats for many years….think about it. Welfare and socialistic systems do nothing but destroy the middle class and give power to the ones on top (mayors, councils, government employees, community organizers ect). The Democratic party is the party of slavery. It enslaves people through taxes and entitlements.
are you kidding me? Look at the bail-out problem we are having now. Tell me what party is more responsible for that?
It all started when Bill Clinton encouraged very bad mortgages to be made by banks and other institutions to minorities and high risk people, because Fannie and Freddie would buy them.
But in 2005, the Senate Banking Committee, then chaired by Republican Richard Shelby, tried to rein in the two organizations bypassing some strong new regulations.
Which would have prevented Fannie and Freddie from acquiring these bad mortgages. It actually gave a new regulator for Fannie and Freddie the kinds of powers that a bank regulator had.
All the Republicans voted for it. All the Democrats, including the current chairman, Senator Chris Dodd, voted against it, and that was after Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan had issued a stark warning to senators that Fannie and Freddie were playing with fire. Greenspan said without stronger regulations, “We increase the possibility of insolvency and crisis. Without restrictions on the size of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, we put at risk our ability to preserve safe and sound financial markets in the United States.”
So the Dems started this mess and the Republicans have to take the fall for it and clean it up.
Shut up about McCain you don’t know what your talking about or doing TO this country. The last thing we in the white house is another republican. We are suppose to believe what McCain tells us? This coming from the same party that has gotten every single important thing wrong in the last 8 years and has abused power, committed felony’s, (wiretapping, and torture), taken away our rights, and you are encouraging MORE?! WTF is wrong with you!?
Republicans said we would be welcomed in Iraq as liberators, not occupiers. Republicans said there was Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Weapons in Iraq. They said we would get Osama bin Laden, ignored intelligence, destroyed CIA tapes of torture, approved wiretapping, martial law (as of October 1st) and still you wave your American Flag and say this is the GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. Fuck you, you ignorant piece of shit. You couldn’t be farther from a patriot, if you tried. Blindly trusting the government in every situation, not fixing your own party but instead encouraging it and just passing the blame of all your failures to Democrats. If McCain gets elected, you will lose many more rights then you have already lost under BUSH, you will be monitored and wiretapped, your internet monitored, you will have no privacy. I can’t believe that I have to explain this to you. Stop watching fox news. You are being fed what Rupert Murdoch wants you to believe.
Neo-Conservatives are truly the most ignorant and evil people in the world.
I was born & raised in Buffalo, NY & have the priviledge of still calling it my home. I have found over the years that those who bad mouth Buffalo often times blame it for their own failures & short comings. Buffalo has just as much to offer a person w/ ambition and drive to succeed as any other major American city. Maybe you should stop looking @ Buffalo as the reason why you’re still hitting mom & dad up for rent money!
THE QUEEN CITY

“observer’ is it? You amuse me. You sit there and say that these cities are in debt because democrats ran these cities, which is funny because our president is a republican and the debt increases $2.56 billion on average EVERY DAY!!! Now what’s the excuse for that? Is is because these democrats are in the legislative and judical branches of government? AHAHA Find out your facts before you start adding ridiculous comments like the one you added
Looking at this list it makes it hard for me to believe this country is even 1st world. Absolutely pathetic. 1st world, and we have cities where life in some parts is almost equal to 3rd world? If we’re so damn rich, then why are these cities so damn poor? Why do we have all this ghetto and crime? 1st world? Could have fooled me.
Then again, I’m not surprised it is so bad. Dollar WAY down, stock market WAY down, economy WAY down. And also, we only have about 14 million illegal immigrants here, and the these two fuckin morons running for presindent don’t want to deport them, rather give them a path to citizenship? At least Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee had it right as far as immigration. Give the illegals 4 months to pack up, get out, and then go to the back of the line if they wish to come back. If they did not get out, then round them all up and deport every single damn one of them. No, these two idiots want to keep them here! Who the hell is gonna support them? Us! Who the hell will pay for their kids schooling and medical care? Us! And to these fucking companies that hire illegals, you all should punished severely or even shut down. I’m 67 years old and I have never seen this country as bad as it is right now. If we countinue going in this direction with the economy, we’ll soon be 2nd world. I would not be surprised.
Originally from nyc, I currently live in buffalo and am a student at buffalo state college. although buffalo isnt like nyc its still a great city. i would much rather come here for school than go to some small town in the middle of no-where.
i dont understand when people say they cant find jobs here. im currently working $10/hr part-time as an intern. i think people arent looking hard enough when they say “i cant find a job”
buffalo has alot of potential for growth! they should capitalize on the falls! look at cananda’s side of the falls! its booming! buffalo doesnt lack culture. it lacks in faith from people!
What people don’t understand about these stats is that all the major cities comprise of just a small part of the community. I live in Miami-Dade County; the city of Miami is only a small part of the whole community . Miami itself is only downtown and the inner city which is mostly black…the rest of the county is a thriving metropolis
I live in one of the Cleveland suburbs, which happen yo be gorgeous. The innercity is depressing. There are lots of jobs in Cleveland, but the people are not qualified for them. This has always been a blue collar city and the high tech jobs are not being filled. The impoverish residents are simply not educated for those jobs. The school system has not had a facelift worth mentioning in 30 years. So you have it. The racism and division within Cleveland is so prevelant, I’m surprised we have stopped having racial riots. You can cut the racial tension with a knife. We still have side of Cleveland Metropolitan area that has a concentration in certain ethnic groups. Little Italy for an example has always been known to hate Blacks, not much has changed. The disrespect to Hispanics is apalling. I could say so much more but I have to get some sleep. MOving in the morning.
Well i’ve read the comments from April to October 9th and have come to a couple conclusions. The people who bash and cry about buffalo for the most part, if you have’nt noticed, are idiots. Their grammar is horrible and cannot spell to save their lives. I recently moved back after being gone almost 11 years and could not wait to come back. I too only have a high school diploma and currently make about 90k a year. I have worked really hard over the years to get to this point and i am very proud of it. It seems as if everyone complaing about the job situation in buffalo expects to walk into and business and find a job starting at 40,50 or 60k…it’s not going to happen. Everything is relative, low income area, low cost living and home prices. Also don’t spend more than you make. You need to prove yourself as an employee before you improve your income. You always hear employees complaining about their bosses or CEO’s about their home, expensive cars, etc.. there is a reason they have these things, it’s called busting your ass to get ahead but you all want it handed to you. There are no jobs here because companies moved out for two majors reasons..NY taxes (which we cannot control) and lazy workers! Life is what you make it, get off your ass and experience things in life other than weed, alcohol, stupidity and ignorance. If you don’t like Buffalo please move because your probably one of the last ignorant assholes left here. As a matter of fact, move to NJ or NYC where you will fit in better!
Canada is a first class nation compare to usa.
1) less crime
2) cleaner cities
3) government takes better care of its citizen’s
4) less people
5) more land
america is a cesspool i wouldnt advice my worst enemy to live there!
Every city, town, suburb, village, etc. Has its poor, middle class and rich. Its what you make of it. If you don’t like where you live.. make the effort to move.. There is charm everywhere your go.. Its all in your thinking and how you see things.. I was born and raised in Philadelphia and moved to the country.. That was my choice..
Hi,
I graduated from Fredonia State University with a bachelors degree in music and a bachelors degree in dance in 1992. I couldn’t find any jobs in N.Y. with my degrees so I went back to college and I got a bachelors degree in Education from Fredonia State University in 1994. Than I got my certification from Buffalo State College in 1995 and a masters degree in education from Buffalo State College in 1998. I lived in Albany, N.Y. but I hated teaching 7th graders, and was making under $23,000 a year. I couldn’t stand teaching, the kids were driving me crazy with their disciplinary. So I went back to school in 1999 and I got my undergraduate degree in Bussiness and Finance at U.B. in 2002 and my masters degree in 2004 and than I got a masters degree in economics in 2005. Upon graduation I couldn’t find any jobs in N.Y. state except in N.Y.C. so I moved their and I loved it. I was making about $90.000 a year and was barely getting by. I was making just enough to pay all my bills but at least I had a job and I loved living in Brooklyn. Than i lost my job in jan. of 2007 and the only job I could find was in Buffalo, N.Y. I was worried at first about transferring because I herd it was a very poor city. I only get paid $18,000 a year at HSBC as a bank loan officer. I must say I was shocked at how far my money went in Buffalo. Buffalo is poor, but the cost of living is very low. I live better in Buffalo on $18,000 a year than I did in N.Y.C. on $90,000 a year. The city has a lot of cool parks, museums, concerts, a great public library and very nice places to eat out at. I must say being close to the falls, and Canada is a huge plus. I’ve also become a huge fan of the bills and Sabres. I also love going back to the Fredonia area for its great wines. Yes Buffalo is poor and yes its hard to find a good paying job here but your money goes a long way. Buffalo is a really cool place to live over all if you only budget and stay in your budget.
I got my undergradute degree in english at Oswego, my masters degree at Fredonia and my doctorate degree at NYU. I’ve lived in California, Texas, W.D.C, and now i’m in Buffalo. I work at the Erie County public Library as a record keeper. I used to make over 80,000 a year in california and about 70,000 a year in W.D.C. but it was never enough to get by on. In Texas, I only made about $30,000 year but the people were very nice and it was always hot and I always had good health. Texas is not as cheap as you may think all though the wages are reasonable. In Buffalo I get paid $17,000 a year. I’m actually shocked at how far my money can go in Buffalo. I live very well here with very little, I have lot to do in Buffalo. I love the availablity of books and materials at the Erie County Library. I must say the main library here is just as good as the one in W.D.C. I just hate the super cold wind and the amount of snow. Than again that gives me ample opportunities to read. Over all after Texas, Buffalo n.y. is a good place to live in.
After I retired I went to Florida, It’s very hot down their and way too expansive. I only get $850 a month in social security. So I moved to Buffalo. I love it up here. Lots of old folks and very affordable compared to Florida and North Carolina. I’m happy I moved. I just hate the cold though.
I lived in Texas, I thought the people their were conservative till i came to Buffalo. I moved to Buffalo because its more conservative for my money than El Paso, Texas.
I’m a KKK member I love Buffalo because its a very segreated city. The niggers are kept on the bottom and treated like scum. LOL!
I think Buffalo is very cool. I lived on the West Coast but I hated the fact that their were so many spics their. I hated California because it had a lot of minorties, especially mexicans and a lot of Asians. It’s also expanisve and I hated all the ethinic foods and most of all I hated the traffic. Besides the niggers Buffalo is okay.
I’ve lived in Cnada, Mexico and in the USA. First of all I must say Canada is really cool and a great place to live. In Mexico the people were very nice. I grew up in Colorado and than I started working for AIG after college. They sent me all over the country, I’ve lived in NYC, Dallas, LA, Atlanta, Phoenix, NJ, and now my job re-located me in Buffalo. Buffalo, is a very poor and narrow minded city, its also very cold. All the men here are so fake and all the city seems to do is drink beer. The men in Dallas, Phoenix, and LA were so nice, relaxed, and just fun to be with. The Men on the West coast and in the Mid West are just a lot nicer, real, and cool to be with and their also more educated. I’m hopeing I get transferred out of Buffalo ASAP as of right now I hate really hate Buffalo.
I so agree with you Karen, the men in Buffalo are just so mean and tough assed. I was also relocated in Buffalo by my company from NYC. It was hard getting by in NYC with my pay but Buffalo is just awful. Its a very poor city to find freinds and a guy to be with. My money does go far here but I hate the cold, the guys, and the club scene here.
I’m currently getting $21,000 a year in Buffalo down from $65,000 in NYC. At this point I’m also thinking about just taking a lower paying job anywhere in Texas, because the gguys their really know how to treat a gal. I’ve dated 5 different guys in buffalo of which 4 have actually slapped me and one guy choked me. I don’t know why the guys here are so violent. The guy choked me because I didn’t want to drink beer and I’ve been hit for not cooking and for not cleaning. Hopefully I’ll go to Texas and just work their even if its for $17,000 a year.
I must say yes I love the fact that Buffalo is a very segrgated city, I also hate niggers period. I moved here from Texas because Buffalo is more conservative than Texas. I’m a teacher here and I do my best not to teach black boys anything, lol. I want every nigger to just die or leave Buffalo forever. I always do my best to hurt them and downgrade them when ever I can because they need to go to Africa. lol
Hi I agree with you Emily I work in the mall. I’m in charge of hiring and I always make sure black men never get hired. I love the fact that Buffalo keeps minorities down and that were so segrgated. Why go to liberal Texas when u can hate niggers right here.
I agree Buffalo is a cool place, I also just hate all these black people here. I wish they just threw them all in jail for being black. Their always taking jobs away from us. Plus their always doing crimes and acting like monkeys or even better lets send them all to Cleveland. Cleveland is nigger land lol.
I lived in Detroit before coming to Buffalo. Buffalo is much cheaper than Detroit and has less black people but has more crime. Buffalo has more to do but Detroit was a lot more cleaner and the people their were nicer.
I’d rather get paid 80% less in a city with less niggers. Out of the 100 largest cities in the USA Buffalo ranked 89th in its population of niggers. For Me Buffalo is good because of that.
Hay all, Below is a list of the ten cities with the least amount of black population among the 100 largest cities.
90. Oklahoma City, Ok
91. Reno, Nevada
92. Phoenix, AZ
93. El Paso, TX
94. Houston, TX
95. San Antonio, TX
96. Cheynne, WY
97. Salt Lake City, Utah
98. Austin, TX
99. Las Vegas, NV
100. Laredo, TX
Buffalo is one of the nastiest and most disgusting cities along with Rochester, NY. I live in Rochester and I am not proud to be born here. Rottenchester and Buffalo are two cities a advise everyone not ever considering moving to.
Everybody who is an arrogant moron, raise your hands…Everybody who is Republican, raise your hands. If we count them all, the numbers should match.
Now, down to business. Buffalo is a great town. I was raised here, lived in the Southtowns for 24 years and I can tell you that if you aren’t ambitious, you’ll be broke and bored.
The University at Buffalo is trying to save this city, and if the next generation can beat their parents defeatist attitude, it can once again rise up and be a great and prosperous city again whether it’s a Democrat or a Republican running the city.
People are blaming the Democrats for everything, but for as long as I can remember it has been a REPUBLICAN running Erie county. It was Count Giambra, and now it’s Chris Collins. Most of the towns around this area are broke, and the city is within the county limits and will feel any legislation handed down, including county budgets.
I left here before, and I will eventually leave here again. I won’t be leaving here because I hate it, or it’s poor, or it’s dank and dirty; hell, those are the what I deem to be it’s charming charicteristics. I love the atmosphere during football season, the rush of the Sabres making a run for the Cup. But let’s be honest: I lived down south, my blood thinned and I freeze my cracker ass off in the winter.
No matter where I go, who I meet or how old I am, Buffalo is my home and it’s who I am. If you don’t like your home, stop telling people that you’re from here.

Einstein once said, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
It is the disadvantaged (define that however you will) who habitually elect Democrats — yet they are still disadvantaged after all these years! Imagine that.
I find the racist talk staggering in this day & age. Sorry to hear so many bad things about Buffalo, I live outside of Philly,& It’s great here. I hope everyone prospers, and pays less in taxes. God bless the USA
like all cities..theres good n bad…if you just look for the negatives it will be bad…search out the positives…and remember the grass always looks greener on the otherside. Yes the economy plays a big factor…but after years of our heads in the sands and the outmode industrial revolution–the pain is evident but good in some places…

Buffalo, my home town, has to be #1…
If there’s a poorer , more depressed, cold, bleak city in the universe, please show me..Detroit? I guess but there’s actually a pulse, although fading…
Buffalo? RIP!!Sad.
