ERIE, Pa. — Two girls, ages 10 and 11, were arrested after police said they dragged another young girl off the monkey bars at a school playground and stomped on her head and legs, sending her to the hospital with a broken hip.
“They started stomping on my head and legs,” the victim, 10-year-old Rikki Triana, told the Erie Times-News from her bed at Hamot Medical Center. “I couldn’t do anything.”
Rikki had surgery Friday and has three pins inserted into her right hip to keep the bones together. She will likely need more surgery and possibly a hip replacement at some point because she is young and still growing, said her mother, Lisa Triana.
The girls were being held in a juvenile facility until they could be formally charged at a detention hearing today.
Police were not releasing the girls’ names because they are juveniles.
“I don’t ever remember having a case where kids this young did so much damage,” police Lt. Dan Spizarny said.
Rikki said the girls splashed water on her 8-year-old sister while they were playing in an elementary school playground at around 7 p.m. Thursday. When Rikki told the girls to stop, they splashed water on her, pulled her off the monkey bars and attacked, she said.
When some adults approached, the girls retreated and the victim’s mother arrived at the scene.
“Mommy, I’m hurt,” Lisa Triana remembers her daughter saying as she went into shock.
Rikki will be moved to Erie Shriners Hospital for Children, where she’ll spend at least a week in therapy.
Detectives told her that the parents of one of the accused girls wanted to apologize.
“I actually feel bad for the other kids’ parents,” Lisa Triana said. “It’s a lot to take in — getting a knock on your door and being told that your kid has brutally beat up another kid.”
Erie County District Attorney Brad Foulk said he doesn’t know what to make of the attack.
“I’ve not seen anything of this magnitude allegedly happening before,” Mr. Foulk said. “We’ve seen cases of bullying, but if these allegations are true, it goes way beyond anything I’ve ever seen. It’s very, very, very troubling.”

Your little girl is having fun at a playground when she spies a group of kids picking on her little sister. Doing what any big sister would do, she intervenes, only to discover she has walked into the middle of a hornet’s nest that results in her being shoved to the ground and stomped so severely that her hip is shattered and she requires surgery and weeks of physical therapy. Upsetting? Sure, but now add to that the fact that one of the perpetrator’s attorneys is moving to have the charges dropped against his client because he wants her to be able move on in her life with a “real appreciation” for what she did. Oh, and did I mention that the alleged perps are aged 10 and 11?

These girls who did this beating should absolutely be punished to the fullest extent of the law. The court has a duty to send a message that this sort of criminal behavior will not be tolerated…FROM ANYONE!!! There is no way the girls who did this beating should be shown any leniency. They did not show any leniency to the girl they beat up so why should they be shown any?
OMG! That is horrible! I h8 those two girls! They must’ve been really fat to have broke her hip!
