NAACP claims discrimination
MANATEE COUNTY - NAACP leaders voiced their concerns in front of the Manatee County Courthouse early Monday morning protesting what they call, “A case of discrimination in connection with a local murder.”
Jury selection is underway in the trial of 19-year-old Michael Walker in connection with the death of 67-year-old Daniel Ramsey. Ramsey was gunned down on Valentine’s Day after he and his wife found two men robbing their home.
Authorities say Walker was the driver of the getaway car. They’re seeking a life sentence. Local NAACP presidents Trevor Harvey and Edward Bailey say in similar cases white accomplices have received lighter sentences.
They also point out the decision involving the murder of 9-year-old Stacey William’s case. The convicted felons got a plea bargain, which only gave them four years for the crime.
“If everybody gets 25 years to life for murder then we have no problem with that, but how does some people get 25 and some people get four…it seems like they’re picking and choosing and their manipulating the system and at the same time their playing with somebody’s life, we just want to see fair and justice across the board, we’re not asking for any type of special treatment, we’re asking for fair treatment,” says Bailey.
NAACP officials say they have not been in contact with Michael Walker, but they will keep an eye on the trial. They are also hoping to speak to State Attorney Earl Moreland about their displeasure.
Makes me physically ill….the audacity of crimminals and racist groups like the NAACP.
