Cities buy American - Hell Yeah!

Brevard County’s biggest city has a message: Buy American.

The phrase has been placed on Palm Bay’s Web site.

The push for purchasing U.S. goods came as city leaders considered a ban on all purchases from China. In addition to the Web site, the City Council has sent a letter to state and federal officials. In the letter, they asked that more work go into bringing manufacturing jobs back to cities like Palm Bay.

“Some people think we do this just to get publicity, but we don’t. We do it because it’s important,” Palm Bay Mayor John Mazziotti said. The letter, though, was written to “President Jeb Bush,” something city leaders said was a simple typo.

A workshop was planned in several weeks to bring the China-buying ban ordinance back for a vote next month. The proposal called for most City of Palm Bay purchases to avoid Chinese goods. Exceptions would be made for items under $50, items that would cost more than 150 percent more, and emergency situations.
